Sorrento Coast
Famous for its cliffs overlooking the sea, making every place of the coast an extraordinary viewpoint. The beaches and surrounding hills are wonderful. The coast has been loved since the Greek and Roman Age.
The peninsula is the southern part of the Gulf of Naples, completely crossed by Lattari Mountains until Punta Campanella, id est the extremity where we find a protected marine area. In front of Sorrento Coast, there is another popular destination, the island of Capri. On the parallel side, begins another corner of Eden, the Amalfi coast. Its position makes it the perfect place for summer holidays since ever.
The peninsula is mostly of limestone and some volcanic rock, unlike the other side of the Gulf which its origin is only volcanic. The presence of the Apennine contribute to enriching the peninsula with hiking and agricultural activities.
The peninsula is also gastronomy: citrus fruits are the source of the famous liquor limoncello, but also an important ingredient for various specialties like Gragnano pasta, always served with lemon, while as desserts we find the Delizia a Limone and the Babà al limoncello, or something cooler like icecream. About cheese, the Mozzarella di Agerola and Provolone del Monaco are the top productions.
The peninsula was also a source of inspiration for writers, filmmakers and photographers.
Municipalities
The peninsula starts from Castellammare di Stabia, famous for thermal baths, has over 28 types of mineral waters and for this is also called “Metropolis of the waters”. The spas were appreciated since the time of Pliny the Elder, as healing springs, unfortunately these establishments are now closed for bureaucratic reasons.
Vico Equense overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea with its 90 meters high. The small beaches of this location are perhaps among the most beautiful of Sorrento coast. Famous is the so-called Tartaruga beach, takes its nickname for a shaped rock that looks like sea turtle.
Meta is located on 111 m above sea level and boasts the largest beach on the Sorrento coast.
Piano di Sorrento is the central point of the coast and rises above the sea 653 m. Part of this location is in tuff, a sign of the ancient volcanic eruptions from the Flegrea area.
Sant’Agnelo is perhaps the most chic part of the entire coast, here there are splendid terraces 47 m above the sea and wonderful villas.
Sorrento is the heart of the homonymous coast. Important centre for swimming, nightlife, shopping and cultural.
Massa Lubrense is the last fraction of the peninsula, but certainly not in importance. Here naturalistic places such as the Marine Park of Punta Campanella and the bay of Ieranto are popular destinations.
